Dr. Ayhan Cankut, Secretary General of the Association of Academy, gave a conference titled “The First Step Towards Full Independence: May 19, 1919” at Çağ University as part of the Atatürk Commemoration, Youth and Sports Day and Youth Week celebrations.
In the conference, Dr. Cankut stated that May 19, 1919, when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk set foot in Samsun, was the beginning of the path that brought the Turkish Nation to independence, national sovereignty and the Republic and paved the way for modern civilization, that Atatürk accepted this blessed day as his own birthday, that the Youth March sung during the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day celebrations symbolized the belief that the sun rising with Atatürk would illuminate our horizons without fading forever, the loyalty to Atatürk's principles and reforms and the duty to protect and look after the Republic, and the idea that we would walk with great determination on the path our Ataturk opened and towards the goal he showed, and that he reinforced his trust in the youth by presenting this holiday to the Turkish youth to whom Atatürk gave the duty of protecting and looking after the Republic.
He concluded his conference with the words; “I swear that I will walk on the path illuminated by our Ataturk's ideas, in the light of reason and science, without stopping, towards the goal he showed!” and the event ended with the Youth March sung with great enthusiasm and the participation of the audience in the hall.
